Side Order of Awful

This was bad.

The frogs were weird and unsettling to say the least, but the last incident was the demonic flaming shark that broke the camel’s back. Whatever was going on was way out of their scope, and they needed to call in an expert.

Sadly, Ethan didn’t know anyone who was an authority on the occult, demons, or animals raining from the sky, but he did have something close. He had a witch.

“Olivia said she can come over tonight for dinner.” Ethan allowed himself to breathe in relief for a moment before a new brick of dread started to form. “Jag, I think we’re going to have to tell her about you.”

“Why?” Jag’s eyes were glued to the sky, searching for any signs of continued zoological weather patterns.

“If she’s going to help us understand what’s going on, then she needs all the information.” Ethan rubbed at his stomach, which was bubbling in anxiety. “This is so bad.”

Jag growled but tilted his head in agreement. “Understandable. But I don’t like it.”

“Trust me. I don’t either.” The headache forming in his temples was like feeling a vice grip across his skull, but Ethan ignored it. He had to figure out something to make for dinner, while ignoring the terrifying possibility that the fabric of reality was tearing.

It made landing on a recipe very difficult.

Jag kept his post by the window, keeping watch over the landscape while Ethan bustled around the kitchen in a mad frenzy of stress cooking. By the time Olivia arrived for dinner, Ethan had made so many side dishes that he ran out of counter space, and the rolls were a little burnt.

He also forgot to cook a main dish.

“Wow, you are having a day.” Olivia raised her eyebrows at the cacophony of side dishes scattered around the kitchen. “Did you get news back about your job or something?”

“What? No.” Ethan shook his head, cheeks flushing. “Why would you think that?”

“Because the only time you make twenty sides is when you’re extremely stressed out. When they put you on sabbatical, you made four pies, remember?”

“That was a good day,” Jag said over his shoulder.

“It’s nothing like that.” Ethan pulled the burnt rolls out and scowled at them. “I’m not stressed.”

“Okay.” Olivia snort-laughed through her words and grabbed a plate. “Go sit down. Jag, make your man a plate of sides.”

Ethan was ushered out of the kitchen and waited at the table he forgot to set. Jag brought him a plate piled with food, since demons had no impulse control, and Olivia brought in utensils and drinks. Unlike Jag, who had finished a plate and gone back for seconds, Ethan could barely manage to eat anything. Olivia’s eyes skimmed his plate, then lifted to stare at him.

“Ethan. What’s wrong?”

“Okay.” Ethan exhaled, rubbing both hands over his face. “This is...going to sound insane and weird, but Jag and I need to talk to you about something.”

“Uh-huh.” Olivia set her fork down and waited, glancing towards Jag, who was still eating.
